Wheelbarrow Alleyways

Architecture and Urban Spaces

On the eastern side of Strandstræde (Beach Street) there are several small Alleyways that connect Strandstræde with Strandlinien (Beach Edge), which is parallel to Strandstræde.
Originally, it was wheelbarrow paths where you could get down to the beach with your gear. More than 200 years ago, Strandlinien was just the beach edge and it was not possible to pass there.
Only Zytfensgade has a width, so you could get down to the beach with a horse-drawn carriage.
Try the narrow Bagergangen (Baker Alleyway), Smedegangen (Blacksmith Alleyway), Fiskergangen (Fisher Alleyway) or Strandgangen (Beach Alleyway) yourself.
